Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
