The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the option to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
