Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
