Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
