Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
