Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
