A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
