A group of seven alleged members of Germany's far-left organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
